Högskolan i Gävle

About the workplace

The vision of University of Gävle is to be the first choice for all who want to make a difference. We offer around 60 study programmes and 300 freestanding courses in the fields of the humanities, health care and medicine, social and natural sciences and technology. University of Gävle is one of the most popular university colleges in Sweden (applicants per place). We have around 16 000 students, 750 employees, and our campus is concentrated in space in beautiful surroundings.

The university focuses on four strategic research areas - sustainable urban development, health promotion, innovative learning and intelligent industry.

We offer

- the opportunity to work at one of Sweden's most beautiful universities,

- a workplace with many employment benefits,

- a university that actively works on issues such as our common working environment, clear working conditions and gender equality and equal opportunities.

The Department of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Science educates engineering students, teacher students and preparatory year students. The largest research group works in electrical engineering, automation and the strategic research area Intelligent Industry. We are now looking for a PhD student in the field of electrical engineering with a focus on machine learning.

Tasks

Within the strategic research area Intelligent Industry, projects are being conducted to create conditions for sustainable production. Two projects use radar technology in industrial processes to reduce environmental impact. In the first project, the aim is to use radar signals to monitor the production of calcite and increase the yield, which can then lead to significant reductions in CO2 emissions. In the second project, the water content of wood chips is measured in industrial applications; if the water content is known, combustion in district heating plants can be made more efficient or pulp production more efficient. Both projects combine machine learning with methods for system identification and physical modelling. In addition, they involve analysing data from real industrial processes and evaluating these data in collaboration with industry.

This project is focused on applying machine learning and system identification to sensor data from industrial production equipment, data from laboratory test systems and/or simulations.

The PhD position includes:

- carrying out the scientific project

- completing courses corresponding to at least 75 ECTS

- teaching and carrying out administrative work

- regular participation in academic activities such as seminars and meetings.

You have your workplace at the University of Gävle where most of your working hours are on campus.

Qualifications

To be admitted to a doctoral programme (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

- completed a degree at second-cycle level or another specialisation that the employer considers equivalent.

- completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

To be admitted to a doctoral programme in the subject of electrical engineering, the current general curriculum requires in particular: a master's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent. Research or professional experience in electrical engineering, in particular machine learning, is an advantage.

To succeed in your doctoral studies, you should be self-motivated and have the ability to drive your work forward. You have a good ability to collaborate with others, have a professional approach and have the ability to analyse and work with complex issues. As a postgraduate student, you must have a willingness to seek new knowledge and also be able to explain and discuss the research with people who are not active in their own field, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, you have a good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English. Good knowledge of Swedish is a merit.

The selection of applicants for a place on the programme is based on an overall assessment of the applicant's ability to benefit from the programme.

Information on admission and employment

Only those admitted to a doctoral programme may be employed as doctoral students. The total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time third-cycle education for four years. A new employment as a doctoral student applies for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

Application form

The application must include a CV, a personal letter and any other documents you wish to refer to.
