Högskolan i Gävle

About the workplace

The vision of University of Gävle is to be the first choice for all who want to make a difference. We offer around 60 study programmes and 300 freestanding courses in the fields of the humanities, health care and medicine, social and natural sciences and technology. University of Gävle is one of the most popular university colleges in Sweden (applicants per place). We have around 16 000 students, 750 employees, and our campus is concentrated in space in beautiful surroundings.

The university focuses on four strategic research areas - sustainable urban development, health promotion, innovative learning and intelligent industry.

We offer

- the opportunity to work at one of Sweden's most beautiful universities,

- a workplace with many employment benefits,

- a university that actively works on issues such as our common working environment, clear working conditions and gender equality and equal opportunities.

The Department of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Science educates engineering students, teacher students and preparatory year students. The largest research group works in electrical engineering, automation and the strategic research area Intelligent Industry.

We are now looking for two PhD students in the field of electrical engineering, specializing in Machine Learning and Predictive Maintenance respectively.

Tasks with specialization Machine Learning

Within the strategic research area Intelligent Industry, projects are conducted to create conditions for sustainable production. Measurement based on radar technology can increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact in industrial processes. This project uses machine learning, system identification and physical modelling on sensor data from industrial production equipment, data from test systems in laboratories and/or simulations.

The PhD position includes:

- carrying out the scientific project
- completing courses corresponding to at least 75 credits
- teaching and carrying out administrative work
- regular participation in academic activities such as seminars and meetings.

You will have your workplace at the University of Gävle, where most of your working hours will be on campus. This position includes doctoral education 80% and teaching/administration 20%, which gives a maximum total employment period of five years.

Tasks with specialization Predictive Maintenance

Performing timely maintenance, i.e. when there is a real need for maintenance and when it does not disrupt production, is essential. Large amounts of data from industrial control systems and order, production planning and maintenance systems can be used to predict and plan maintenance actions using machine learning, digital twins and neural networks. A challenge is to improve collaboration between the production planning and maintenance processes so that machine availability is synchronised with production needs.

The PhD position includes:

- carrying out the scientific project
- completing courses corresponding to at least 75 credits
- regular participation in academic activities such as seminars and meetings.

This position is a collaboration with the University of Angers, France, and will be carried out at both institutions and will lead to a doctoral degree from both institutions. The initial 18 months of the appointment will be in Gävle, then 18 months in Angers and the final 12 months in Gävle. At both universities, most of the working time is on campus. This position involves full-time postgraduate studies with a maximum total duration of four years.

Qualifications

To be admitted to a doctoral programme (Chapter 7. 39 § Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

- completed a degree at second-cycle level or another specialization that the employer finds equivalent.

- completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS, of which at least 60 ECTS at second-cycle level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

To be admitted to a doctoral programme in the subject of electrical engineering, the current general curriculum requires in particular: a master's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent. Research or professional experience in electrical engineering, in particular machine learning, is an advantage.

To succeed in your doctoral studies, you should be self-motivated and have the ability to drive your work forward. You have a good ability to cooperate with others, have a professional approach and have the ability to analyze and work with complex issues. As a postgraduate student, you must have a willingness to seek new knowledge and also be able to explain and discuss the research with people who are not active in their own field, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, you have a good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English. Good knowledge of Swedish is a merit.

The selection of applicants for a place on the programme is based on an overall assessment of the applicant's ability to benefit from the programme.

Information about admission and employment

Only those admitted to a doctoral programme may be employed as doctoral students. The total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time third-cycle education for four years. A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

Terms and conditions
